Hi there! On the off chance that anyone who used to follow me will see this, I've decided to announce that I'm starting a new blog. You can find me at Flights of Fancy, though I haven't posted yet because I'm still trying to get over the anxiety that comes with the first post. I hope to see you there!

I have a confession to make: I have been seriously slaking off with the whole blogging deal. I suppose you've already realized that, it's pretty darn obvious. I don't really have an excuse, either - I've just been lazy, and that's all that I can say. I cringed when I realized that my last post was from October, which seems like years and years ago now.
I used to read through my blogger feed every day, but I began to do that less and less, too. Today, when I sat down and finally caught up with all my favorite blogs, I couldn't believe how therapeutic it felt. Blogging was something that I had missed so much, without even realizing it. Not just writing on my own blog, but reading other people's blogs, too: one of the things that surprised me most when I started blogging was the community. I was amazed at how friendly and kind everyone was - getting a nice comment from a fellow blogger is a terrific feeling. Reading through my favorite blogs, I began to worry: what if everyone else thinks I've gone stagnate? Will I be able to slip back into the flow? I decided to start blogging again, once and for all, no excuses!
I've also decided to cut back on the book reviews and make my blog a bit more personal. Lately, I haven't been reading as many books as I would like, and that's been one of the main reasons why I'm having trouble blogging.
For a quick review, I have been reading some really great fantasy novels lately. I binged on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy over winter break, listening to the audiobooks constantly. The plot and the premise is so deeply engrossing and philosophical, it's hard to pull away. The books are incredibly rich and well - written, and I'd highly recommend them unless you're religious and easily offended - the series deal with some major religious issues.

Book cover porn - the covers for the Hebrew editions of the trilogy are gorgeous. I love the art nouveau style. Link

I've also been reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel, and I must admit - it's terrific. The book is over 1,000 pages long, but I'm slowly plodding through it and loving every word.
I never got the chance to wish my followers Happy Holidays, but I hope everything went well. This year was really special for me, with lots of time spent with family and friends. My Christmas was wonderful, and I got some really great gifts. As for the new year, I'm pretty excited. 2013 had a lot of ups and downs for me, so I'm hoping 2014 will run more smoothly. As corny as it may be, I have a great deal of faith in fresh starts.

Hi everyone! Long time no see...

It's needless to say, but I'm very sorry for my long absence. What with school starting, the impending doom of the PSATs, computer issues, extra homework and so on, time and energy have been hard to come by.

Also, I've been kinda intimidated by the next book I'm going to review. I've never reviewed any of my all time favorites, and frankly, it's pretty scary - particularly with such a controversial book.

I realized that I simply had to review it after I heard A very exciting rumor: the author, who died several years ago, left instructions in his will to publish five more books.

You may have already guessed it: I'm going to review The Catcher in the Rye.

I love the book. I read it last summer - I wanted it to last forever, but I couldn't stop reading. Catcher is the archetypal teenage manifesto. Holden Caufeld speaks my mind, and I can relate to him more than I probably should. Holden is in no way a roll model. He's an icon of teenage rebellion (wikipedia says so), but frankly, it would be pretty screwed up to try and emulate him - is life is miserable. Said to be based very much on J. D. Salinger's own experiences growing up, Catcher is laced with a delicate balance of angst and melancholy. It mirrors my everyday feelings exactly. True, I'm not as bitter or judgmental as Holden, but yes, the mix of angst and melancholy is the same. That's why I love it so much.

I know, a lot of people don't like Catcher for one reason or another. I must admit, there are a lot of reasons to dislike it. After all, do you really want to read about a rich white dude complaining for 214 pages? I know, I thought not. The first time I heard of Catcher, I was talking to a friend who'd read it for school. "It's about this guy who runs off to New York and complains and swears every other word," he said. "Don't read it." A shining recommendation, right?

Still, it's not as if Holden has no reason to complain. As the book progresses, his vulnerabilities start to show, and you begin to realize how deeply human he is. An anonymous quote on the original jacket summed him up perfectly: "The boy himself is too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his story. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was born in the world not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it."

I won't hold a grudge against anyone who feels differently than I do about the book. Catcher in the Rye has had a big impact on my life since I first read it, so give it a chance before dismissing it. As a teen, it's comforting to know that other people have the same feelings as you do, and I only hope others can understand the beauty of the story.

Catcher in the Rye (by J. D. Salinger) is magic. Please read it.

This is my copy. I bought it at a used book store and collaged the cover with photos from magazines and vintage catalogues. I never write in books, highlight them, and so on, (I try my best to keep them "pure") but Catcher is just so important to me that I wanted to do something special with it (and the original cover was boring anyway). I guess it's my way of honoring the book.

Remember how I told you that I'd be posting lots over the summer? Well, I lied. I'm sorry. I've been away from wifi quite a bit, and I've been so busy, doing all sorts of exciting things...
I haven't posted as much over the summer as I would have liked, and I'm sorry for that. I have reasons for being absent, I swear! I've been having all sorts of fun, and now, I'm going to write a totally non-book-related and self-absorbed post to show you just how cool and fun my summer has been.
I've already posted about my trip to the midwest, and a promised pictures, too!
This ride is so scary - and so fun! It takes you up in the air, and then lets you drop in a free fall.
Ok, I'm done. I'd like to write more, but time is limited. If possible, I'll post more pictures later.

So, for the first time in quite a while, I'm actually writing a post about books!
I apologise for keeping all you lovely folks waiting so long, summer has been busier than I expected!

The book that I'm reviewing today is Where Things Come Back, by John Corey Whaley. I read it on my trip out West, and admittedly, it probably wasn't the best vacation read. Yes, it was a quick read, but it was pretty intense, and defiantly manipulated my emotions!

Things are pretty dull in Lilly, Arkansas, seventeen-year-old Cullen Witter's hometown - until the supposedly extinct Lazarus Woodpecker is spotted nearby, and his younger brother mysteriously disappears. As Cullen and his family desperately search for his missing brother, the town is thrown into a woodpecker craze, infuriating Cullen, who feels the attention should be given to finding his brother.
The novel is skillfully written, incorporating multiple storylines into the plot. The characters are vivid, and the story is full of surprises - melancholy and hopeful at the same time. I occasionally found the writing style somewhat awkward, but it didn't ruin the book for me. This book is a tearjerker. It's dream-like and touching and powerful, and the world needs more books like this.
I'm sorry I haven't been able to post lately; I was away from wi-fi for a while, and for the past week I was super busy interning with a kid's writing program. Now, I'm sick in bed, so I thought I'd take the chance to finally write this post. I really should have posted before now, because I've been nominated for the Liebster award by four different blogs! I'm very happy about this, because the blogs that nominated me are among my favorites, and it's really an honor. I'm also happy that so many blogs have nominated me. All and all, I'm very happy about this. For the Liebster award, you write 11 facts about yourself, answer 11 questions by the blogger who nominated you, and pass the nomination on.

Right now, I'm at writing camp - I'm having a lot of fun, and I hope I can manage to write more blog posts. I was planning to post pictures of my midwest trip, but I don't have my camera with me. Maybe I'll write a "this summer" post at the beginning of the school year, and post pictures of everything I've done.

I promised you a post with reviews of historical fiction and classics, but I haven't been able to read much lately, and no books immediately come to mind. Frankly, as I believe I've said before, historical fiction is not my favorite genre - so I don't read much of it. I like classics, though, and I think I'll be able to make a decent list later... maybe when I come home. I'm super stoked for a C. S. Lewis book I checked out of the library - not one of the Narnia books, I think it's more mature and philosophical. I'm also reading a sci-fi novel called Congo, which I also reccomend if sci-fi is your thing.

Terry Pratchett in General

Terry Pratchett is a satirical fantasy writer - one of the UK's best selling and most critically acclaimed fantasy writers before J. K. Rowling came along. I've only read three (Equal Rites, Small Gods, The Truth), but I've enjoyed all of them.

I think The Truth is my favorite so far. The characters are the best thing about the book - Mr. Tulip and Otto the vampire have joined the ranks of my all-time favorite literary characters. I also like the concept behind the novels - they take place in a parallel universe, and the same characters pop up in different novels. The series is a lot of fun to read, and with 39(!) books in all, it'll take a good, long time to work though the whole thing.

K. Rowling on Female CharactersI just found this video - it's J. K. Rowling discussing female carecters in Harry Potter. It's terrific, and you should watch it. Here's the link:
http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=l5Pj-MPN_co&feature=fvwp&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dl5Pj-MPN_co%26feature%3Dfvwp

I loved the video - I've read some criticism of Harry Potter, since a lot of the really powerful people in the series are male, but I've never thought any of it was well founded. In the video, Rowling explains why her female characters are the way they are, and shows how much thought went in to developing them. She talks about how she's always seen Mrs. Weasly as a really powerful female figure, not "just a housewife," and how much she drew on her own childhood for Hermione. It becomes clear how much thought she put in into her characters, and really, it flips everything around and it becomes clear that some of the most powerful figures in the series really are the women after all.

Cassiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16214699115870650863noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1586218872518903677.post-14379511658929314182013-05-31T19:20:00.000-07:002013-05-31T19:20:03.226-07:00Facts About Me

L. KonigsburgA few weeks ago, E. L. Konigsburg - my absolute favorite writer between the ages of 8 and 11 - died. Her books included From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place, and The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World, as well as View from Saturday. I loved her books. her characters were incredibly vivid, from feisty grand dames (ie, Mrs. Zender, Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler) to my first fictional crush. She wrote about art, which made me, the daughter of two artists, feel smart. Her books were a huge part of my childhood. I haven't read one of in years, but I'll always remember and love them.
In honor of Mrs. Koningsburg's life, I'm making a booklist devoted to her books:
The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World

While I was working on this post, I took a break for a while to read the reviews of this book on goodreads, and I seriously wished I hadn't, because they depressed me. The reviewers, mostly grownups, had opinions about the book and it's intended age range. Apparently, 10-year-olds aren't supposed to care bout art. 10-year-olds aren't supposed read books that deal with the Holocaust or include the word bitch. I say, screw the grown-ups with grown-up opinions about what ten-year-olds should read. That's one of the best things about E. L. Konigsburg - she broke the standards of Kid Lit, but that only made them better. When I was a ten-year-old, I didn't care about what I was supposed to like or read. I read this book anyway, and I loved it.
The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place

A totally charming book about a girl struggling to save the giant folk art sculpture her two uncles spent years making. I didn't let myself read the reviews on goodreads, so I can't rant against stupid grown-ups who have stupid opinions about this book.

The classic. You might have read this book for school. Anyway, if you don't already know, it's about Claudia and Jamie - brother and sister - who run away to live in the metropolitan museum of art. It's all about art, New York City, mysteries, and Konigsburg's signature feisty old lady - so how could it not be great?

I loved this book so much. It's brilliant and funny - and to me, when I first read it, it was awe-inspiring. Reading and re-reading this book was a huge part of my childhood - I mean, I even carried it around just in case I suddenly, urgently needed to read it. I'm re-reading it now, and I still love it. It's just as charming as it always was.

I'll miss you, E.L. Konigsburg.

I'm very sorry I've taken so long with this post. I would tell you that I've been busy, but that's a pathetic excuse, and besides, "I've been lazy" would be more accurate. To make up for my laziness, I'm going to write a whole lot of mini-reviews on the books I've been reading lately.

Sphere, by Michael Crichton:

I have to admit, I love science fiction. Michael Crichton, who wrote the original Jurassic Park novel, is terrific. Sphere is engrossing, creepy, and thought provoking: exactly what a good sci-fi novel should be. I love the premise, too - the military ships a group of scientists down to a research station in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, where an unmanned spaceship encrusted with centuries of coral was discovered. It's not the spaceship itself they have to worry about, though, it's the mysterious and otherworldly sphere they find inside.

Grendel by John Gardner and Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney:

Frankly, I expected Beowulf to be dry and incomprehensible (I had to read it for school), but Seamus Heaney's brilliant translation proved me wrong. It definitely wasn't an altogether easy read, but the poetry was so deliciously rich that I couldn't help but enjoy it. John Gardner's modern novel, Grendel, takes the monster antagonist of Beowulf and digs into his thoughts. It's completely different from the original epic - it focuses on the psychology and emotion of the monster, whereas Beowulf only highlights heroism.

The Diviners takes place in 1926, so when I saw it at the library, I had to get it. It's a dark and spooky book filled with serial killers, cults, magic, and flappers. I especially liked the characters - the author gives you plenty of details about each one, and allows you into their heads. The second book in the series should come out sometime next year.

Be forewarned, though, it's pretty hefty!

You see, It's my nature to hate anything that's popular and like anything that's critically acclaimed (or at least pretend to). So, naturally, when something that's both popular AND critically acclaimed comes along, my brain kinda blows a bit. That's why John Green's books pose such a dilemma. I can't say that I'm John Green's biggest fan - I mean, there are so many people who really, really love him - but I have respect for him, all the same.
(I plan to write a post on John Green later).
I think Paper Towns has been one of my favorite John Green books so far. I don't think it's the most well - written, but I really enjoyed it. Paper Towns is the story of Quentin Jacobsen, a high school senior about to graduate, and his obsession with his neighbor and childhood friend, Margo Roth Spiegelman. When Margo enlists Quentin to help bring justice to her two-faced friends, he thinks that this might be the beginning of something new - but Margo disappears the next day. Armed with a set of carefully placed clues that seem to lead nowhere, Quentin and his cronies head off in search of Margo - or, the Margo they thought they knew. Though the book occasionally calls for a stretch of the imagination, it's a great read, and a real page-turner. It's fun, intriguing, and satisfying - a combination which always makes for a good book.
So you might notice that my blog has a slightly different look now. That's so it's easier to find the "follow" button.
So yeah, I'm expecting a cult following by tomorrow, people.
(cough)
Also, I've added a poll, please vote so I know what kind of books you want me to review. Feel free to comment if you have any recommendations.
I'll get a proper post done soon. I've been super busy.
Alsos, here's a link to some INCREDIBLE early photos IN COLOR, like the one of a zeppelin below.
Looking back over the books I've read in the past year, A Step from Heaven stuck out.
A Step from Heaven is the story of Young Ju - a girl who immigrates to America (Mi Gook in Korean) at age four along with her mother and father. The sparse, poetical chapters are bittersweet and poignant, sketching scenes of Young Ju's life as she grows up, struggling with her two cultures and increasing family troubles. When Young Ju and her brother find a baby bird, when she tries to explain government forms to her father, and the scenes of family tension are each memorable and beautifully written.
A remarkable debut novel by author An Na.
I'm showing you how to make a pretty basic origami box, which you might already know how to do. Anyway, if you enjoy the tutorial, I'll probably make another soon - I just learned how to make an origami rose, and I hope to do a tutorial before valentine's day.

So, down to business.

You'll need two sheets of origami paper, one for the lid, and one for the base.

I'm starting off with the fancy, patterned paper for the lid.

1. Take the paper and fold it in half. Crease it, and unfold.

2. Fold the paper in the opposite direction, and unfold.

3. Now, fold all corners to the center of the paper.

4. ... and fold each side to the center, without unfolding the folds from step 3.

5. Fold the narrow ends to the middle.

6. UNFOLD EVERYTHING
except two of the little triangular flaps...

Well-written and dark, Martyn Pig is pretty brilliant.
When fifteen-year-old Martyn Pig accidentally kills his abusive, alcoholic father a few days before Christmas, he doesn't know what to do. If he calls the police, he'll be sent to live with his hated aunt Jean - if the police even believe his story to begin with. With the help of his friend Alex and his collection of mystery novels, Martyn tries to cover up his father's death. But things get complected when Alex's blackmailing boyfriend shows up, demanding Martyn's 30,000 pound inheritance. The plot twists and turns, though it's never hard to follow. I was able to get lost in Martyn Pig, to forget about everything else when I was reading it. Though it's not overly serious (considering its content), it's thought-provoking and enjoyable.

I recommend Kevin Brooks in general, too - another of his books which I've enjoyed was Lucas, and I only recently finished Black Rabbit Summer.
I read I, Coriander - another book by Sally Gardner - a few years ago, and I liked it. The Red Necklace has promise, but I found it seriously lacking. Though the plot moved at a quick pace and the idea was brilliant, it left me feeling bland. What even happened? Admittedly, I haven't read the book's sequel, but I expected more out of 384 pages than I got.
What the plot lacked, though, was made up by the beauty of the writing and characters. Set during the french revolution, The Red Necklace is the story of orphaned gypsy Yann and aristocratic Sido. Yann and Sido meet when the villainous Count Kalliovski hires Yann and the rest of his acting troupe to perform at a party. When Count Kalliovski kills Yann's mentor, Sido helps Yann escape unharmed, and they remember each other until they meet again, two years later. As their country crumbles around them, Yann uses his developing magical powers to save Sido and himself and to fight Count Kalliovski. I'm not a fan of historical fiction,* but I really wanted to like this book. I found it worth the read, but not exceptional.

*I'm sure I'll rant about that sometime, lucky you!
I read the book last summer, and enjoyed it - so when I first heard about the movie, I was wary, especially since it's a very "literary" book. It's the story of an Indian boy - Piscine "Pi" Patel, named for a swimming pool, son of a zoo owner - and at sixteen, Pi sets off to Canada with his family on a Japanese tanker ship which sinks in the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean. Pi finds himself trapped on a lifeboat with a 450 pound Bengal tiger, Richard Parker , an orangutan, a zebra, and a hyena - and soon, only Pi himself and the tiger are left. As Pi struggles to survive, he relies on his (exceptionally strong) faith in God to keep himself from total despair. Pi encounters swarms of flying fish, sees the ocean alive with luminescent jellyfish, and discovers a mysterious and horrifying floating island. The book moves slowly, but the story is enough to make you read on.
The movie is gorgeous, and the incredible cinematography nicely complements the book's prose. From the lush scenes of India to the shots of Pi and Richard Parker alone in the lifeboat, the whole thing is jaw-droppingly beautiful. It follows the book well enough: I'd personally rather see a good movie that wanders off course than an awful one that follows a book word for word, though, and Life of Pi is definitely a good movie.
Either way, the story itself is incredible. It's the kind of story that sparks your own imagination, and takes your mind gallivanting off into a dozen different directions. The plot is remarkably believable, though the last few pages of the book will challenge everything.

I plan to write a more general post about fiction into film sometime in the relatively near future, stay tuned!
I don't know why I put off reading this one for so long, but I'm glad I did, because it made my vacation that much better.
The book is set in Opium, a country of land between the United States and what was once called Mexico. Matteo Alacrán is the most powerful of the drug lords who rule Opium, and the book's protagonist, Matt, is his clone. As Matt grows up, he becomes more and more aware of the corruption surrounding him - and as the story builds, it spirals off into a series of intricate and unexpected plot turns. The book boasts a large cast of memorable characters, from Matteo Alacrán himself to Celia, Matt's caregiver, from Tam Lin, Matt's bodyguard, to María and the wide pantheon of Matteo Alacrán's friends and relations. The House of the Scorpion is a rich, dark and engaging novel. It'll keep you awake at night, but I can guarantee you won't want to stop reading. From the first chapter - Matt's birth in a cow - to the brutal and shocking end, it's a terrific read 100% worth your time. It'll leave you thinking too, and it won't be easy to put down even after the last page.

But you won't have to! The sequel is coming out sometime this year.
Yet another reason to be glad the Mayan apocalypse never happened.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Cassiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16214699115870650863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1586218872518903677.post-77333983505301192382013-01-13T14:22:00.001-08:002013-05-28T12:01:30.383-07:00Let's start from the very beginning: Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf, by Catherine StorrFor my first official book review, I'm going to write about my absolute favorite book from the ages 5 to 9. That's right, Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf. I loved it. Looking back, I still do. The book is a collection of short stories, (loosely) based on Little Red Riding Hood, featuring seven-year-old Polly and the wolf who wants to eat her. The stories are hilarious in a droll sort of way, and as a little kid, I loved them. On weekends, or whenever I came home from school, I'd sit in my room for hours and listen to the tape I'd found at my library. The book was first published in England, 1955, but the plot of each story was strong enough to transcend the culture/time barrier. I might not have known what a perambulator or meat pasty was, but that didn't matter. When the wolf tried to change himself into a fox, when he got himself locked in a zoo, I rooted for the wolf as well as Polly. The wolf wasn't a threatening villain, he was just too stupid for that. Even Polly admits that, at the end of chapter six:
"I'm glad," thought Polly, "he didn't blow my house down. I hope he wont go now and blow himself up."
The book's sequel, Polly and the Wolf Again, was just as good, introducing the character of Polly's little sister, Lucy, who proves to be just as clever as Polly. This is honestly still one of the best and funniest books I've ever read, and I'd recommend it to anyone, no matter what age.
I'll end with a quote.
Dear Polly, this is a Threatening letter. If you don't come and see me at once, I shall
eat you all up. Yours sincerely,
A. Wolfe.
I'm really excited about this blog, since I've been thinking about it for a long time and I've finally gotten my act together. I love to ramble, (who doesn't?) so I think it'll be pretty fun. I plan to ramble about books, but don't quote me on that, 'cause that could change, and I'll probably throw in random interesting tidbits, too. I'm 15, and I mostly read teen books. I really like teen books, and this article from the New York Times is interesting and will help you understand why, If you're wondering why someone who calls herself the pseudo-intellectual is still stuck reading YA paperbacks.
I love critiquing books and things - I'll read almost anything, so I plan to write about the books I read, my favorite books, my least favorite, and anything in between. I'm hoping to post semi-regularly, (a belated new year's resolution!) so if you're interested, come back for more. I really hope you'll enjoy The Pseudo-Intellectual, and thanks for visiting!Cassiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16214699115870650863noreply@blogger.com0
